Canvas at a glance
Not sure whether your current theme is technically healthy enough to move into Canvas? Zinzo's entry point is a Performance Scan of your existing theme.
| Topic | What Canvas does now | What Canvas doesn't do (yet) |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Every template side by side, changes via chat or direct clicks | Manually adding a new block |
| Themes | Shopify-built themes and custom themes | Themes from third-party developers |
| Apps | Apps keep working in the regular editor | App blocks and app embeds in a Canvas theme |
| International | Add the theme to a rollout as a replacement | Per-market customization, translating inside Canvas |
| Maintenance | Sidekick validates its own code and reviews screenshots | Theme updates, downloading theme files |
1. What is Shopify Canvas?
Canvas is a visual workspace that lays out every page of your store at once and lets you change them together with Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent. You describe what you want ("make the hero bolder and more editorial") and Sidekick edits the theme code. Changes land in Canvas in real time.
The difference from the existing theme editor is that Canvas renders the real code rather than a static preview. Sidekick works directly in the theme files, validates its own code and reviews screenshots of the result before handing it back. Shopify reports that Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026.
You open Canvas from the Themes page in the Shopify admin. Staff need the Edit code permission to use it.
2. What Canvas doesn't support yet
Shopify is upfront that Canvas is early and doesn't replace the existing editor yet. The gaps are specific, and they mostly affect stores that have outgrown a stock theme.
Shopify says it expects to support theme app extensions before Canvas becomes the default editor. Meanwhile, apps keep working in the current editor and on existing themes.
| Limitation | What it means for your store |
|---|---|
| No third-party themes | If your store runs on a Theme Store theme built by an outside developer, Canvas won't open it |
| No app blocks or app embeds | Apps that surface through the theme, such as reviews or bundles, are missing from a Canvas theme |
| No theme updates | Bug fixes and new features from the theme developer stop arriving |
| Theme files can't be downloaded | No backup or export of the code Sidekick wrote |
| No per-market customization | You can't build a separate variant for, say, Germany or the UK inside Canvas |
| No translating inside Canvas | Translations go through the Translate & Adapt app |
| Desktop only, early access | Not every store has access yet |
3. Why these limitations matter
The core issue is ownership of your code. Once you edit a theme in Canvas, it effectively becomes your own fork: no more updates, and no way to download the files. Who maintains that code, tests it and rolls it back when something breaks becomes your question to answer.
The second issue is performance. There are no public measurements of Canvas theme load speed yet. That is no reason to assume they're slow, but it is a reason to measure. Every change, human or AI, can add CSS, JavaScript or sections that linger after they stop being needed.
The third issue is governance. Anyone who opens Canvas has code editing rights. On a team where marketing and developers share one store, that calls for clear rules on who publishes what.
For a new, small store on a Shopify theme, Canvas can be a practical alternative to hiring an agency. Shopify describes a fully custom store in roughly twenty minutes; that is a product example, not a guaranteed project timeline. Explore the 1-Day Shopify Performance Fix.
4. When Canvas fits and when it doesn't
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| New store on a Shopify theme, few apps | Canvas is a strong start; measure load speed afterwards |
| Existing store on a third-party theme | Canvas won't work; stay in the current editor |
| Store that relies on apps with app blocks | Wait until Shopify supports theme app extensions |
| Multiple markets or languages | Wait, or test on a copy only |
| Custom theme under version control with a dev team | Agree first how Canvas edits relate to your codebase |
| Quickly testing a campaign page or a new direction | Good use case, on a duplicated theme |
5. Checklist before you publish a Canvas theme
- Are you working on a copy of your live theme, not the original?
- Who owns the code now that the theme no longer receives updates?
- Which apps use app blocks or app embeds, and what disappears without them?
- Did you measure Core Web Vitals before and after the Canvas changes, on mobile?
- Do your markets, translations and currencies still behave as expected?
- Who on your team has the Edit code permission, and who is allowed to publish?
- How will you roll back to the previous version if conversion drops after launch?
6. Methodology
This page was written by Zinzo, which itself sells Shopify engineering and performance optimization. We state that openly and base every fact about Canvas on publicly verifiable sources.
What we don't do: we don't rank agencies or tools, and we make no claims about Canvas theme load speed until measurements exist.
What a limitation means here: the state of play according to Shopify's own documentation on the check date. Canvas is in early access and changing quickly.
Last checked: October 5, 2026. Next editorial review by November 16, 2026, and sooner whenever Shopify changes Canvas limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Shopify Canvas?
Shopify Canvas is a visual AI workspace, launched on October 1, 2026, where merchants design their entire online store together with Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent. You see every template side by side, describe a change in plain language and Sidekick edits the theme code directly. You can also click elements to change them yourself. Canvas is in early access and doesn't replace the existing theme editor for now.
Is Shopify Canvas free?
Shopify doesn't list a separate price for Canvas. According to the Shopify Help Center, Canvas is available on plans that include theme customization. If you move to a plan without theme customization, you can still view a Canvas theme but can no longer edit or publish it. As of October 2, 2026, Canvas is in early access and only available to some stores.
Does Shopify Canvas work with third party themes?
No. Canvas only works with themes developed by Shopify and with custom themes. Themes from outside developers aren't supported, even if they come from the Shopify Theme Store. You can check who developed your theme under theme sources in the admin. On some older themes you also can't edit text directly in the preview, so text changes go through block settings or Sidekick.
Do Shopify apps work in Canvas?
Partly. Apps keep working in the current theme editor and on your existing themes. But in a theme you create or duplicate in Canvas, you can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds. Apps that show up through the theme, such as reviews, bundles or upsells, will be missing. Shopify expects to support theme app extensions before Canvas becomes the default editor.
Will Canvas replace the Shopify theme editor?
Not yet. Shopify says plainly that Canvas isn't replacing the existing editor for now and that gaps remain. Canvas runs alongside the current theme editor. Shopify does say app extension support will arrive before Canvas becomes the default, which suggests Canvas is meant to become the main route for theme changes over time.
Does a theme edited in Canvas still get updates?
No. According to the Shopify Help Center, a theme you edit in Canvas no longer receives theme updates. Bug fixes, new features and compatibility improvements from the original developer stop arriving automatically. You also can't download the theme files of a Canvas theme. Always edit a copy, and decide up front who maintains the code.
Do I still need a Shopify developer with Canvas?
For visual changes to a Shopify theme, increasingly less, and that is a real gain for smaller stores. For integrations, custom apps, checkout logic, ERP or PIM connections and performance work, Canvas changes nothing. Someone who reviews, measures and maintains the Canvas code also remains necessary once your store carries revenue you don't want to put at risk.
Can I use Shopify Canvas with GitHub?
Don't count on it for now. Shopify states that you can't download the theme files of a theme edited in Canvas, and it doesn't mention Shopify GitHub integration support for Canvas themes. If your team runs a custom theme under version control, test Canvas on a separate copy and keep your main theme out of Canvas until this is clarified.
